Urban enviroment week 5
In the library this week I started looking that this magazine called Bloom, I was blown away by it. I loved the idea of exotic fruit and vegetable being linked to sensuality and same with flowers. I made copy of some of these pictures for my sketch book. I found these pictures very inspiring. As I was researching in week 3 the national animal of the different countries I found this picture in bloom magazine of where a coat was designed using a bird as inspiration.
I have made several sketches of the produce I purchased. I have taken more photos of the produce because some of them have started to decompose. I have been trying to create a pattern that I could use. I have been told I need to make my sketches more 3D. And also I need to make my drawings more detailed. I have get my drawings up on the wall which I made a start at. I have done some bead work inspired by the vegetable I bought in the Chinese shop.
Urban enviroment week 4
After doing my research I was taken by the national flower of these country including my own. I downloaded pictures of these flowers and I started to sketch them out. I had a tutorial with Sarah and she pointed out to me that there was no point to sketching pictures that I downloaded from the Internet and that I should be sketching something that is tangible.
I also had a tutorial from Liz. She showed me this amazing book on embroidery from the most unusual form of inspiration . That got me thinking, I then decided to go to the ethnic shops in limerick city and I wanted to get vegetables or fruits that you could only get in these shops. I got few different vegetables with very unusual textures, colours and form. This meant that my research was now tangible and could be tied back to the urban environment. I was actually able to find the root of the lotus flower in the Chinese shop. this meant the my sketches of the flowers are able to be tied back to the urban environment. I took lots of photos of these items.
Urban Enviroment Week 3
After Friday's tutorial Micheal said he expected more from me and that I the area I was focusing had lots of scope for development. Left there feeling very angry with myself. He was right in saying that I was still waiting for inspiration which was true. And after that tutorial went home and had a good cry once I got that out of my system I decided to start again from scratch. I think the comments I received at the tutorial was justified and it was the kick I needed to get going. I went to library and borrowed this book on creativity and the author said that inspiration only comes from doing!
So I went home and started doing loads of research on ethnic people that I meet in the limerick city when I was taking my photos. I have decided to focus on 5 communities which I think make up majority of the ethnic community in limerick city and they are the Nigerian, Indian, Chinese, Roma and Polish people. In my research I wanted to know what the national flower of the communities was? And what the national animal of these countries was? I also wanted to research their architecture, food, drink, religion and dress. I also got very interested in the textiles from these countries and how they have been translated in the urban environment.

Urban Enviroment Week 2
Very distressed this week. I felt after Friday's tutorial that clearly I had not done enough and very directional less. Got a one to one tutorial with Elaine Riordan. After that I felt I now had a more defined path.
I decided I was going to focus wholly on ethnic diversity that exists within the urban environment.
And how ethnic diversity indirectly influences the city and its people. So within ethnic diversity I am going to focus on food, cultural dress, religion and architecture.

My urban enviroment
After having been given the project. I immediately decided that limerick city would be my urban environment. I got started on my mind map.
On my mind map I explored lots of different avenues and asked myself questions like where does this city get its energy? or what makes an urban environment? I wanted to explore consumerism in the city and ethnic diversity. I also wanted to explore the city from Celtic boom to bust. As I am new here in this city this was me getting to know this city while doing this project. So I went out and took pictures. I took did a collage of adverts and events happening within the city.
